Glider Academy
Applications Due - 15 April 2011
Activity Dates - 9-16 July 2011

The Texas Wing Cadet Glider Flight Academy (GFA) is going to be held 9-16 July 2011 at the Soaring Club of Houston near Waller, TX. This year we will be holding simultaneous Academies for Advanced and Basic glider training. Cadets who have attended a prior Glider Academy will be enrolled in the Advanced Academy and cadets with no prior instructional experience will enroll in the Basic Academy. The tuition is $1,000 (a slight increase over last year) for all attendees.
This year we are adding a new feature for Advanced Students: After soloing, each will have an opportunity to enjoy SOARING, which is what this type of flying is all about. This will involve a set of extended sorties which will expose the student to thermal soaring, etc.

The primary requirements for cadet students are: 1) CAP members in good standing, 2) hold the rank of C/SrA by 9 July 2011, 3) be at least age 14 by 9 July 2011, 4) have attended at least one cadet basic encampment, and 5) have their unit commander's recommendation. Additional details may be found in the Ops Plan.

If unable to pay all the tuition, some of your local outside organizations (Air Force Association chapters, EAA, Daedalians, VFW units and other Veteran Groups) and CAP units have given scholarships in the past. The Flight Academy does not have any Scholarship funds, and its staff cannot make any of these arrangements for you. It is best to contact your unit commander for ideas. Request any scholarship early, since they take time for approval. Start now!

To apply, send your unit commander's recommendation letter, an essay, titled "Why I want to attend the Texas Wing Glider Flight Academy", and a completed TX WG Form 31A to the Registrar: Capt Darrell Roquemore, 614 N. Hickory, Tomball, TX 77375.

Applications must be postmarked no later than 15 April 2011. Do not e-mail your application. We must have the original signed copy. Please include your own e-mail address, the source of your tuition, and T-shirt size. The last date to enroll is 15 April. Don't wait until the last minute!

The Operations Plan is attached and will be on the Texas Wing web site soon. After all applications are in, successful applicants will receive an acceptance letter with additional instructions.

1. Fill out TX WG F31a. Ensure parents and commanders signatures are on it
2. Have Unit Commander write a recommendation letter
3. Write Essay "Why I want to attend the Texas Wing Flight Academy"
4. Place all 3 in the same envelope
