Houston,
TX – This
past weekend, Sheldon Cadet Squadron held its second annual Emergency
Services Orientation Weekend (ESO). It was designed specifically
to introduce some basic principles of what emergency services are about,
and help cadets have a whole lot of fun doing one of CAP’s most pivotal
missions.
There
was an excellent turnout, with around 40 people in attendance. C/2Lt
Michael Schulin of Thunderbird Squadron, an instructor for GSARSS at the
2006 Texas Wing Winter Encampment, was the cadet commander. He and his
staff of instructors taught classes over line searches, natural hazards,
communications, direction finding, and carries. These are a few subjects
cadets go to GSARSS to learn about. They also succeeded in getting many
of the cadets General Emergency Services qualified.
The senior in
charge, 1Lt Richard Gates, stated that,” the activity was an overall
success in terms of the number of people who were GES qualified and the
information that the cadets attained.” C/CMSgt Lisandro Rodriguez and C/CMSgt
Kayla Stiles, truly enjoyed the weekend as well, stating,” We looked
forward to this weekend all year, and it was everything we had hoped it
would be.”
This
activity opened up many of the cadet’s eyes to the opportunities Civil
Air Patrol gives its members in its vast and ever expanding programs.
Overall, the ESO Weekend was a success for Sheldon Cadet Squadron.
