25 December 2006
Downtown San
Antonio, Texas - was host to the Puerto Rican Heritage Society on
November 19th, 2006. In commemoration of the discovery of Puerto Rico,
the group celebrated their 10th anniversary. The group
gathered at the La Villita Assembly Hall, in which the Lackland Cadet
Squadron Honor Guard was requested to serve as the celebration
commenced.
Sunday morning started
out as any ordinary day, but the sense of commitment and pride for Civil
Air Patrol ran high as the cadets prepared themselves before the
performance. As the cadets arrived at the Hall, they were soon briefed,
and the commander of the Honor Guard detail, Cadet Airman First Class
Damian Moulder was soon set on the various movements the Honor Guard
would take while they would present, then post the colors. Joining cadet
Moulder was lead rifleman Cadet Airman First Class Nicole Miglis,
Carrying the Texas Flag was Cadet Airman First Class Daniel Perez, the
Puerto Rican flag was solemnly carried by Cadet Airman First Class Kris
Kerr, and final rifleman was Cadet Master Sergeant Colleen Rojas.
Promptly the cadets were ready, and the event soon started with the
singing of the National and Puerto Rican Anthem, both of which were sung
beautifully by Ines Gomez. After both anthems, the cadets proceeded and
posted the colors with crispness and precision. The cadets briskly
marched away from the presentation as they received applause from all
areas of the Hall. After the posting they cadets were given outstanding
compliments from various onlookers in addition to Alba M. Correa,
President of the Puerto Rican Heritage Society. The next day was the
start of, La Semana de Puerto Rico, as declared by Phil Hardberger,
Mayor of San Antonio.
The
Lackland Cadet Squadron is part of the nationally recognized Civil Air
Patrol, Auxiliary of the United States Air Force. The Lackland Cadet
Squadron has been serving its community along with many others in
humanitarian missions, along with search and rescue, and disaster
relief. It focuses on the Cadet Program which helps develop the leaders
of tomorrow, and also educates our cadets through aerospace education.
Aerospace education teaches our cadets through instructional classroom
and practical work such as learning to fly in Civil Air Patrol owned
aircraft. Its members pride themselves in being the oldest squadron in
Texas, and continue serving the community through various Color Guard
and Honor Guard performances. Civil Air Patrol will celebrate its 65th
Anniversary on December 1, 2006, sixty-five years after its founding. It
was founded seven days before the attack on Pearl Harbor, in which it
was called to serve the nation by performing coastal patrols against
German submarines which were known to be just off the coast of the
United States.
The
Honor Guard would like to thank Lt. Estelle A. Kelly who helped
coordinate this event through the Lackland Squadron.
